CD OF THE WEEK: EPX - ELEVEN EPX is the Elusive Project X, a mysteriously named joint effort by Brent Calkin, Shaye Martirano and Flavio Monopoli. The 11 tracks that collectively explain the title of EPX's debut find a band cleverly exploring a variety of contemporary pop styles strongly influenced by the Massive Attack / Portishead / Morcheeba axis, but also incorporating rhythm and blues, touches of abrasive electric guitar and an occasional power chord. Includes a delicate version of The Velvet Underground's "I'll Be Your Mirror" and cheekily pokes fun at its own serious posturing with the sexual politics and lyrical playfulness of "Checkmate". Local labels Map or Nettwerk might want to hear this. - Tom Harrison, The Province, Thursday, February 17, 2000. |
